~ In the fall, D.T.S. second graders begin to practice their research skills while studying Native American tribes from different regions of the United States. We read many Native American legends and place knots on our counting ropes.
~ In September, the children prepare for Grandparent's Day by writing poems of "Happy Thoughts", creating projects, reciting poems, and practicing songs to present to their grandparents and special friends.
~ Second grade students can always be found writing stories and publishing their very own books.
~ In reading, second grade students continue to use big books to learn about characters and story elements. Rhyme charts are also used to explore the rhyme and rhythm of reading.
~ In the beginning of the school year, students investigate everyday uses of numbers, count groups of objects in more than one way, and compare amounts. Second graders enjoy playing games involving money and finding different coins that show the same amount. Exploring, sorting, comparing, and describing different shapes is always a fun math activity too. Students use materials such as interlocking cubes, pattern blocks, Geoblocs, and money. They work with peers, write and draw about their work, and talk about how they do the problems.
